💵 R580 paid monthly by SASSA
Check your payment date via Vodacom, MTN or Capitec Pay.
The Grant-in-Aid is an extra R580 per month added on top of your existing SASSA grant — whether that is an Older Persons Grant, Disability Grant, or War Veterans Grant. It is designed for grant recipients who need someone to look after them full-time because of a physical or mental condition. SASSA pays on staggered monthly dates: Older Persons first, then Disability. You can confirm your payment date through your Postbank account, your Capitec Pay app, or by dialling the SASSA helpline from any Vodacom or MTN number. Check if you qualify today.
⚠️ Your grant may stop — act now
Missing documents can block your Postbank or Capitec Pay payment.
If your supporting medical report is out of date, SASSA can suspend your Grant-in-Aid without warning. That means no R580 arriving in your Postbank account or your Capitec Pay wallet at the start of the month. Beneficiaries who bank with Standard Bank or use a TymeBank card have also reported delays when personal records held by DHA do not match their grant file. You can check your status and requirements at any SASSA office — bring your SA ID and your latest medical report. Do not wait until your payment is stopped.
Where to collect your grant 🏦
Most Grant-in-Aid recipients collect their R580 through Postbank, which operates at Post Office branches across South Africa. If you or your carer cannot travel easily, ask a SASSA social worker about a home-visit arrangement. Bring your SA ID and your SASSA green card on your payment day. Many recipients in rural areas also confirm payment SMS alerts using a Cell C or Telkom SIM. If you have been switched to Capitec or another approved bank, visit the nearest SASSA office to update your payment details before the next payment cycle.
SASSA now supports payment directly into a Capitec account for eligible grant recipients. The Capitec Pay app lets you check your balance, set up notifications, and draw cash at any Pick n Pay or Shoprite till — no need to travel to a Postbank branch. You can also link your Capitec GlobalOne card for everyday spending. Recipients who previously used an FNB eWallet or a TymeBank account may ask SASSA to update their banking details at any local office. Confirm your payment day via the app or by calling SASSA from your Vodacom or MTN number.

How do I apply for the Grant-in-Aid at my nearest SASSA office?
To apply for the Grant-in-Aid, visit your nearest SASSA office in person. Bring your SA ID (13-digit South African ID Number), your existing grant card, and a medical report from a registered doctor confirming that you need full-time care. The social worker will assess whether you meet the Means Test and the medical requirements under the Social Assistance Act No. 13 of 2004. Once your application is captured, SASSA will notify you of the outcome. If approved, your R580 per month will be paid into your Postbank account or your Capitec Pay account, depending on your registered payment method. You can travel to the office using a Vodacom or MTN call to confirm opening hours before you go.
How much is the Grant-in-Aid in 2026 and when is it paid each month?
In 2026, the Grant-in-Aid is R580 per month, effective from April 2026, following the announcement in the Budget Speech. This amount is subject to confirmation in the next Budget Speech. SASSA pays on a staggered schedule throughout the 2026/2027 financial year: Older Persons Grant recipients are paid first, followed by Disability Grant recipients, then children's grants. You can check your specific payment date on the official SASSA payment schedule at sassa.gov.za, or by calling the SASSA helpline from any MTN, Vodacom or Cell C number. Payments land in your Postbank, Capitec, Standard Bank or FNB eWallet account depending on your registration.
What should I do if my Grant-in-Aid application was declined or stopped?
If SASSA declined or stopped your Grant-in-Aid, you have the right to appeal within 90 days of receiving the written decision. Visit your nearest SASSA office with your SA ID and the decline letter. Common reasons for suspension include an outdated medical report, a mismatch between your DHA records and your grant file, or a failed Means Test review. Ask SASSA to explain which requirement was not met. While your appeal is being processed, check whether you still qualify for the Disability Grant or Older Persons Grant. You can receive payment updates via your Capitec Pay app, your TymeBank account, or by dialling the SASSA helpline from your Telkom or Vodacom number.
