SASSA can suspend your Older Persons Grant if your income or assets change and you no longer pass the Means Test. It can also be stopped if you move to a state institution, or if your details are not kept up to date at the Department of Home Affairs. Review your records at your nearest SASSA office and make sure your Postbank or Capitec account details are current. Use Cell C or Telkom data to check your SASSA status online before the next payment date — and avoid an unexpected gap in your family's income.

PostbankIn-person collection

Postbank is the primary payment channel for SASSA grants. You collect at any Postbank ATM or Post Office branch by presenting your green-barcoded SA ID card. Postbank does not charge a withdrawal fee on SASSA payments. If you have trouble accessing a branch, ask a SASSA social worker about assisted collection. Many grant recipients also keep a Capitec or Standard Bank account for day-to-day spending, topping up via FNB eWallet transfers from family members. Always take your original SA ID — a certified copy is not accepted at Postbank ATMs for grant collection.

Capitec PayDigital payment option

Capitec Pay lets SASSA grant recipients receive their Older Persons Grant directly into a Capitec bank account — no monthly fees and no minimum balance required. Open a Capitec GlobalOne account at any Capitec branch with your SA ID to link it to your SASSA payment. Once linked, you get an SMS notification the moment your grant lands — whether you are on Vodacom, MTN, or any other network. Prefer a different digital option? TymeBank and SnapScan are also accepted by some SASSA-linked retailers for grant disbursements. Speak to SASSA about switching your payment method at your next visit.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How do I apply for the Older Persons Grant at a SASSA office?

To apply for the Older Persons Grant, visit your nearest SASSA office in person. Bring your original 13-digit SA ID, proof of income (such as a payslip or pension statement), and proof of residence. SASSA staff will assess whether you pass the Means Test based on your income and assets. If you already have a Postbank, Capitec, or Standard Bank account, bring your account details so SASSA can link your payment directly. There is no application fee. If you find it difficult to travel, ask a family member to enquire at SASSA about home visits for elderly or frail applicants. You may qualify if you are 60 or older and meet the income thresholds.

How much is the Older Persons Grant in 2026 and when is it paid?

From April 2026, the Older Persons Grant is R2,400 per month. If you are 75 or older, you receive an extra R20, bringing your total to R2,420 per month. SASSA pays on staggered dates each month throughout the 2026/2027 financial year — Older Persons are paid first, followed by Disability grant recipients, then children's grants. You will receive an SMS on your Vodacom, MTN, or Cell C number when your payment is ready. Collect at any Postbank ATM, or receive the funds directly in your Capitec account if you have linked it to SASSA. Amounts are subject to confirmation in each annual Budget Speech.

What should I do if my SASSA grant payment did not come through this month?

If your Older Persons Grant did not arrive on the expected SASSA payment date, first check your Postbank account balance or your Capitec Pay notifications to confirm no deposit was made. Then call the SASSA toll-free helpline (0800 60 10 11) or visit your nearest SASSA office. Common reasons for a missed payment include a failed Means Test review, outdated banking details, or an ID that needs verification at the Department of Home Affairs. Make sure your Capitec GlobalOne or TymeBank account details are still active and correctly linked. Always use official SASSA channels — never respond to WhatsApp messages or calls asking for your ID number or PIN, as these are scams.
