2026 Shopping List

See exactly what you can buy with your monthly allowance at Walmart, Kroger, and CVS.

Lists valid for Q1 2026 Participating Retailers.

1. The "Healthy Food" Catalog (New for 2026)

Gone are the days when your benefit card only covered aspirin. The 2026 Expanded Rule allows plans to cover real, nutritious food.

If you have the "Grocery Allowance" rider on your plan, these items are typically 100% Approved:

  • Fresh Produce: Apples, Bananas, Berries, Lettuce, Tomatoes, Potatoes.
  • Protein: Fresh Meat (Beef, Chicken, Pork), Fish, Eggs, Tofu.
  • Dairy: Milk, Cheese, Yogurt, Butter.
  • Pantry Staples: Bread, Rice, Pasta, Beans, Canned Vegetables, Cereals.
  • Hydration: Bottled Water and Vitamin Water.

2. Over-the-Counter (OTC) Essentials

In addition to food, your card balance can be used in the pharmacy aisle. These items do not require a prescription:

  • 💊 Pain Relief: Tylenol, Advil, Aspirin, Arthritis Creams.
  • 🩺 First Aid: Bandages, Antiseptic, Thermometers, Blood Pressure Monitors.
  • 🦷 Dental: Toothpaste, Toothbrushes, Denture Adhesive/Cleaner.
  • 👓 Vision: Reading Glasses and Contact Lens Solution.

3. How to Checkout (The Process)

Using your benefits at the register is simple, but you must follow the correct order to avoid embarrassment.

Step 1: Separate Items While newer systems are smart, it is safer to group your approved food items together on the conveyor belt.
Step 2: Scan Member App Some retailers (like Walmart) allow you to scan items with your phone app to verify eligibility before you reach the register.
RECOMMENDED
Step 3: Swipe Flex Card First Always swipe your benefit card as the primary payment method. The system will deduct the eligible total. You pay the remainder with cash or personal card.
Can I buy Pet Food?

Generally, NO. Most standard plans strictly forbid pet food, alcohol, tobacco, and non-health household items like toilet paper or cleaning supplies.

Does it cover delivery fees?

Some premium plans (like Humana or UHC) now allow you to use credits for Instacart or Walmart+ delivery fees, but you must check your specific plan details.

Professional Disclaimer: Product eligibility is determined by the specific "SKU" codes at the retailer and your insurance carrier's formulary. Lists provided here are for general guidance based on standard 2026 SSBCI guidelines. Always check your carrier's app while shopping.
