Decoding tracking messages, Tax Topic 152, and estimated deposit timelines.
Read below to understand why your refund may be "Pending".Why is My Refund Still "Processing"?
After filing your 2026 return, the most common status you will see on the "Where's My Refund?" tool is "Return Received". However, millions of taxpayers get stuck on "Still Being Processed". This usually happens for one of three reasons:
Understanding the Status Bar
The official tracker moves through three specific stages. Understanding exactly where you are can reduce anxiety about missing payments.
- Return Received: The IRS has your file. It has passed the basic security check but has not been approved for payment yet. Note: "Accepted" by TurboTax/H&R Block does not mean "Approved" by IRS.
- Refund Approved: This is the golden status. The IRS has finished processing your return and has scheduled a Direct Deposit date. You will see a date appear on the side.
- Refund Sent: The money has left the Treasury. If you don't see it, check with your bank (some take 1-3 days to post the funds).
Common Tax Topics & Codes
Often, the tracker will disappear and be replaced by a "Tax Topic" or a reference code. Here is what the most common 2026 codes mean:
What does "Reference Code 9001" mean?
This code usually appears when you try to access the refund tool with a secondary SSN (for a spouse). Always use the Primary Filer's SSN to check the status.
I received a CP05 Notice. What now?
A CP05 notice means the IRS is "holding" your refund to verify your income or tax withholding accuracy. This is a manual review that takes 60 to 120 days. You typically do not need to do anything unless they ask for documents.
My deposit date passed, where is my money?
If the status says "Sent" but the money isn't there, wait 5 business days. If it still hasn't arrived, your bank may have rejected it (e.g., if the names didn't match). The IRS will then mail a paper check, which takes 3-4 extra weeks.
