Department of Social Protection Transfer Schedule. The "Thursday Rule"
Consistency is key when budgeting on a low income. For the vast majority of recipients, the Working Family Payment (WFP) is processed on a strict weekly cycle. The official payment day is Thursday.
This means the funds are released by the Department of Social Protection overnight. Depending on your bank (AIB, BOI, Revolut, or Credit Union), the funds typically become available in your account early Thursday morning. However, this schedule changes significantly during Bank Holiday weeks.
2026 Bank Holiday Changes
When a Bank Holiday falls on a Monday or close to the payment day, the Department usually issues payments early to ensure no family is left without funds over the long weekend.
02
Early Payment Likely: Expect funds on Friday/Saturday, Jan 31st.
17
Schedule Alert: Because the holiday is Tuesday, payments due Thursday, March 19th should process as normal, but bank clearing times might delay slightly.
06
Major Early Payment: Payments due Thursday after Easter are often unaffected, but social welfare bonuses usually land on the Friday before Easter.
First Payment for New Applicants
If you have just applied for WFP under the new 2026 limits, patience is required. The current processing time for new WFP applications can range from 4 to 8 weeks depending on the volume of applications.
The "Lump Sum" Effect: The good news is that if your claim takes 8 weeks to process, you do not lose that money. Your first payment will be a significant Arrears Payment (Lump Sum) covering all the weeks back to the date the Department received your application. This often results in a first bank transfer of over €1,000 for many families.
Electronic Transfer (EFT) vs Post Office
Unlike Jobseeker's Allowance which is often collected in cash at the Post Office to prove residency, Working Family Payment is almost exclusively paid via Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT) directly into your checking account or Credit Union account. This provides privacy and convenience.
Can I change my bank account?
Yes. You can update your bank details on MyWelfare.ie. However, do not close your old account until you see the first payment land in the new one to avoid missing a week.
Why didn't I get paid this Thursday?
If your payment has stopped, it is likely your 52-week renewal period has expired. The Department sends a renewal form 6 weeks before your payment ends. You must return this to continue payment.
What time does the money land?
This depends on your bank. Revolut and digital banks often show the funds shortly after midnight on Thursday morning. Traditional banks (AIB/BOI) usually clear funds by 6:00 AM.
