The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed the uprating of benefits for the 2026 financial year. Based on the September inflation figures, the Universal Credit Standard Allowance will increase starting from the new tax year in April.
Below is the projected monthly breakdown for claimants:
| Claimant Status | 2025 Rate | 2026 New Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Single (Under 25) | £311.68 | £316.98* |
| Single (25 or over) | £393.45 | £400.14* |
| Couple (Both under 25) | £489.23 | £497.55* |
| Couple (One 25+) | £617.60 | £628.09* |
*Estimated figures based on 1.7% CPI uplift confirmation.
Payment Schedule: January 2026
Universal Credit is paid monthly in arrears. However, payment dates shift if your due date falls on a weekend or a Bank Holiday. For January 2026, many payments were adjusted due to the New Year Bank Holiday.
Changes to Additional Elements
Beyond the Standard Allowance, the "elements" for children, disability, and housing are also subject to the 2026 increase.
- Child Element: The rate for a first child (born before 6 April 2017) will see an increase, providing essential support for families.
- LCWRA: The Limited Capability for Work and Work-Related Activity element remains the highest top-up for those unable to work due to health conditions.
- Work Allowance: The amount you can earn before your benefit is tapered (55p for every £1) is also expected to rise.
When exactly do the new rates start?
The new rates officially begin on April 6, 2026 (the start of the new tax year). However, because Universal Credit is paid in arrears, you may not see the full increase in your bank account until your May or June payment cycle.
Will my rent payment increase?
The Housing Element is calculated differently, often based on Local Housing Allowance (LHA) rates. While LHA rates were frozen for years, recent adjustments may apply. Check your local council's 2026 LHA tables.
What time does the money enter my account?
Universal Credit payments are typically processed via BACS and should be available in your account shortly after midnight (00:01 AM) on your payment date. Depending on your bank (e.g., Monzo, Starling), you might see it earlier (4 PM the previous day).
