Official 2026 Fiscal Year Calendar for the Canada Disability Benefit.
Confirmed direct deposit dates for 2026 below. The 2026 Payment Protocol
Consistency is key for financial planning. For the 2026 fiscal year, the Canada Disability Benefit (CDB) will follow the standard federal payment protocol established for the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) and CPP. This means payments are generally issued on the third-to-last business day of each month.
However, weekends and statutory holidays (like Canada Day or Christmas) will shift these dates. It is crucial to mark your calendar, as automated bill payments should be scheduled after these confirmed deposit dates to avoid Non-Sufficient Funds (NSF) fees.

Retroactive Payments: The 24-Month Rule
One of the most valuable features of the CDB rollout is the provision for retroactive payments. If you are eligible but apply late, you do not lose your entitlement. The government allows for a "look-back" period of up to 24 months.
Example Scenario:
If you become eligible in July 2025 but do not submit your application until July 2026, you will receive a lump-sum payment covering the 12 missed months. At $200/month, this would result in a one-time deposit of $2,400, followed by regular monthly payments.
Inflation Indexing (CPI) - July 2026
July is the most important month in the benefit calendar. This is when the annual "Cost of Living Adjustment" (COLA) is applied. Based on current inflation projections of 2.1% to 2.5%, the base benefit amount of $200 is expected to increase starting with the July 29, 2026 payment.
This indexation is automatic. You do not need to re-apply to receive the increased amount, provided your 2025 tax return was filed on time.
Common Payment Issues
What time of day are funds deposited?
For most major Canadian banks (RBC, TD, Scotiabank, CIBC, BMO), federal direct deposits are processed overnight and are typically available in your account between 3:00 AM and 6:00 AM local time on the scheduled payment date.
Is the retroactive lump sum taxable?
No. Just like the monthly benefit, any retroactive lump sum payment from the Canada Disability Benefit is 100% tax-free. It will not push you into a higher tax bracket and does not need to be reported as income.
I received a cheque instead of a deposit. Why?
If the CRA does not have your valid banking information, they will default to mailing a physical cheque. This adds 5-10 business days to the delivery time. We strongly recommend logging into MSCA to set up Direct Deposit for faster access.
Will this payment clash with my ODSP/AISH date?
Federal payments (CDB) and provincial payments (ODSP/AISH) are on different schedules. While they may occasionally land in the same week, they are processed separately. The CDB is a federal "top-up" and does not replace your provincial check.
